Apada Industries 306000 A16 Single Bug Bivy Review

I was very disappointed in this bug bivy. The angle from the ground at the top of your head to the top of the bivy brings the net in contact with your head. For me, a bug bivy is one that keeps bugs, specifically mosquitoes, away from my body parts, not one that allows access. I threw mine away.

Bear Deterrent Bear Spray Review

Bear Deterrent Bear Spray
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you determine that you need pepper spray this one works.Originally, when I was terrified of bears, I bought this spray to defend myself in case of a bear encounter. Now that I have lived around bears for four summer seasons at a bear viewing lodge in Alaska and understand them better, I still carry pepper spray. With a little practice and understanding of the medium this can be an effective defense if you should need it. It improves your attitude of confidence, and an attitude of confidence is often your best defense. I don't expect to use mine anymore, but having it with me and accessible makes my outdoor experiences more enjoyable. Like many bear experts say, it is not brains in a can, but it is lighter than a gun, takes less expertise and won't kill anything, including you.

Hammock Bliss No-See-Um No More - The Ultimate Bug Free Hammock Review

Hammock Bliss No-See-Um No More - The Ultimate Bug Free Hammock
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have gotten into hiking and wanted to replace my tent to cut weight and actually get a decent nights sleep for a change. After reviewing about every hammock out there I purchased the Hammock Bliss. I got it fairly quickly but was worried about set up as I had no time to practice before my trip this past weekend. We went to Stone Mtn NC with 3 other guys and the daytime temp was 74 and the nighttime was supposed to be around 50. I was worried that it would be cold at night so I decided to take a car reflective sun shield for my pad and my 30 degree mummy bag and a tarp (rain wasnt in the forcast but wanted to see what it would be like with the tarp). I found two trees about 8-10 ft apart that were medium size that also had some bark and werent slick. This is ideal as you dont have a ton of extra rope. I had brought extra for the tarp just in case as well but I would suggest bringing extra and know how to tie overhand knots or other knots to join the two pieces. I used the bowline knot and tied an overhand with the extra on both sides and it didnt budge. You want to hang it at chair level normally, but hang it a little high the first time as it will sag with your body weight on the first few uses. Next I set up the guy lines for the bug net and that was easy as well. So with no practice, I was able to get set up in no time at all. I had my dinner cooking while setting up and it was hot and ready by the time I finished with the tarp up. I like the tarp not being included as I would rather provide my own and have the hammock at a lower price. Plus there are tons of different tarps on the market so to me its a plus to be able to customize your setup. Now to how I slept, I am a big guy at 250 and it held my weight fine getting in and out. Luckily it wasnt windy at all which is surprising being on top the mtn. I started off with laying on the reflector and using my bag as a quilt. I had slept about an hour and woke at 11.15 and my shoulders were freezing as they were touching the hammock. I should have got out and repositioned everything but I wiggled in my sleeping bag and eventually got it zipped up. Slept straight till 4.15 and had to readjust again and slept till 7. I slept and felt great in the morning and wasnt stiff at all. I wondered about being claustrophobic as well but in the end I really enjoyed the closed in feeling. I really think if it had been windy I may have had to share a tent though as it did get down to 45. I will be experimenting with other setups (like an underquilt) and will update what works best, but can tell you I am not going back to sleeping on rocks and stumps. I hope this helpsComment | Permalink

Mountain House #10 Can Freeze-Dried Food Review

Mountain House #10 Can Freeze-Dried Food
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For backpacking, you can't beat the weight savings of freeze-dried food. For some reason, the Mtn House rice doesn't agree with me, so I got the can of Diced Chicken. It's actually cheaper--in bulk--instead of buying their pro-paks.Plus, Mtn House puts way too much rice in their pro-paks.

The taste is, well, the taste of manufactured, cooked chicken. What do you expect?Don't get me wrong; it tastes well enough to eat, and on the trail it tastes better.

One serving (on my scales) weighs 1 oz.Amazing.Unbeatable.

I bought some Lipton freeze-dried chicken fried rice and will divide it up with the chicken for easy, on-the-trail food-making (in those Ziplock ZipnSteam bags).

If you don't have your own dehydrator, the weight savings alone is incredible--and worth it.Highly recommended for backpacking!

SansBug 1-Person Mosquito-Net Tent Review

SansBug 1-Person Mosquito-Net Tent
Average Reviews:

The item can be assembled and disassembled in seconds, and is nice and compact. The main drawback is you have to add in about 8 to 10 inches more of the length in order to fit comfortably. We needed to fit in a 6'8" person and the dimension specs appear to enough with some extra room. The length wise ends slope inwards and then up, so this takes away valuable room. The head and the toes touched each of the tent. The width is good and sufficient. We returned this item, and ended up buying one from REI locally for $90, which is twice the price of this. Summary: if you are 6 feet tall or under, this product would be good for you.

Texsport Patio Umbrella Net Review

Texsport Patio Umbrella Net
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ok, idea is great but for lack of material or not for a 9' umbrella as stated.
Like another user, the net did NOT reach the deck surface properly. If I had a smaller umbrella ( an 8' or 7' ) it would have been fine.( BTW, noticed in ad picture they closed the umbrella a little bit to make the net perfect on the floor )
I spent about a 1/2 hour adjusting the net to fit proper to no avail. When I pulled on one side, it just lifted the other ( there was really no more give in the elastic top ring ).
So, if you have a 7' or 8' umbrella it will more than likely work ok, but not for a 9' as in the ad.
Quality of materials not the issue, just the lack of lenght!

Stansport Single Mosquito Net Review

Stansport Single Mosquito Net

This mosquito net is too small. It didn't extend over the cot I was sleeping on, which was significantly smaller than a twin size bed, and mosquitos got in. I don't think it would have covered me had I been in a sleeping bag on the floor either. I recommend purchasing the larger size. Also, you need something to hang it up with since nothing comes with it.

Atwater Carey Sleep Screen Mosquito Net Review

I purchased this product to use primarily at home and when traveling. Even when staying at 5 star hotels there always seems to be one mosiquito in the room. This net works great, but the only drawback is that it acts as an insulator. You might have to sleep with the AC on if you are in a hot humid climate. I have never been bitten when using the net tent;)

Coleman Mosquito Net Review

Coleman Mosquito Net

If you are being bitten my really small mosquitoes called No-See-Ums - mosquitoes that are hardto spot with a naked eye - then the Coleman Mosquito Net's mesh size is too large to work against No-See_Ums (Small Mosquitoes). For that, go with a higher mesh (190 or higher) - Like Coghlan's Deep Woods Mosquito Net. I did. And have been enjoying some much-needed peaceful sleep at night.

Pro:
1. Finally I can expose my body without worrying damn mosquitos.
2. Do you expect more? what can it be...

Con:
1. it feels like hard plastic fiber rather than soft cloth.
2. The height of the tent is smaller than 2 meters so that I can't hang it high.
3. The tent can't effectively cover my single bed. I have to lower it and make some compromise.
4. A little pricy.

I built an outdoor bathtub overlooking our river in the Salmon River Mountains. The net is suspended from poles over the tub in full sun and susceptible to the daily morning and afternoon winds that come up and down the river valley. It has been up for most of the summer and is still doing the job of keeping bugs away...an added benefit is it keeps many of the pine needles and other blown debris out of the tub as well.Given the wet spring and summer's bumper crop of mosquitos and flies, the tub would have gotten no use without this netting!I will certainly buy more in the future! Great product at a reasonable price.
